A rate over 1% (based on followers) is considered satisfactory.

Instagram does not provide the ready-made rate in Insights. You have to find the data and calculate it manually.

A restaurant in Volos posts its new daily special. The post gets 150 likes and 5 comments. The owner sees the numbers but does not know if the performance is good relative to his account size. The answer lies in the Instagram engagement rate, the metric that shows how many people saw the content and interacted with it.

In Greece, the social media audience is large. According to DataReportal (January 2025), there are 7.32 million active users, which is 73.5% of the population. Specifically for Instagram, NapoleonCat recorded 5,936,600 users in June 2026, mostly aged 25-34. With such a large audience, simply counting likes is not enough.

Measuring interaction shows if your content interests your audience. If you have 10,000 followers and get 50 likes, you need to make changes. If you have 500 followers and get 50 likes, your account is performing exceptionally well.

How to calculate the Instagram engagement rate

There is no single way to measure interaction. Analytics companies use different formulas. The two most common ones are based on followers or reach.

The first formula uses followers as the denominator. Sprout Social adds up all interactions (likes, comments, saves, shares) and divides the sum by the total number of followers. The result is multiplied by 100. This method is useful for comparing with competitors, as the follower count is public.

it overvalues small accounts and undervalues large ones

Socialinsider

The second formula measures interaction based on reach, meaning the unique accounts that saw the post. Hootsuite considers this formula (Engagement Rate by Reach – ERR) the most common. You divide total interactions by reach and multiply by 100. Later gives an example: if a post has 500 likes, 50 comments, 100 saves, and 25 shares with a reach of 10,000, the rate is 6.75%.

Comparison · FormulasHow to calculate your engagement rate

The two main ways to measure interaction and when to use each.

Based on Reach (ERR)

Based on Followers

Formula

Interactions ÷ Reach × 100

Interactions ÷ Followers × 100

Accuracy

High (measures those who actually saw it)

Medium (overvalues small accounts)

Best for

Evaluating your own performance

Comparing against competitors

Data

Only in your own Insights

Publicly available (follower count)

Source: Socialinsider 2026.

The formula you choose changes how your statistics look. A post’s reach is usually lower than the follower count, so this calculation yields higher percentages. Pick one formula and use it consistently to accurately compare your progress.

What is considered a good rate in 2026

Finding a general average is difficult, as platforms publish different numbers. Quid (formerly Rival IQ) gives a median rate of 0.30% for 2026 (based on followers). Socialinsider records an average of 0.45% for the second quarter of 2026. Conversely, Hootsuite reports 3.5% and Buffer 5.5% for 2025, because they use reach.

Account size plays a role. HypeAuditor data shows that accounts with 1,000 to 5,000 followers average 4.8%. The rate drops to 1.2% for accounts with 20,000 to 100,000 followers, and to 1.0% for those with 100,000 to 1 million. As the audience grows, maintaining high interaction becomes harder.

The industry also affects the data. According to Rival IQ for 2025 (per follower), the food and beverage sector has a median of 0.40%, financial services 0.26%, fashion 0.15%, and beauty 0.14%. A hair salon should not compare its statistics with a university (which reaches 2.10%).

<figure class="gfx gfx-bars" id="g2" role="group" aria-label="What is a 'good' rate? According to Meta (via PostZen), Views indicate “The number of times your content was played or displayed.” This includes replays. If someone watches your reel three times, three Views are recorded.

In contrast, Viewers (or Reach) are the unique accounts that saw the content. The three views from the same person count as one Viewer. Interactions compile likes, comments, saves, and shares. Accounts engaged shows how many unique accounts performed these interactions.

For stories, statistics include Profile activity, which tracks actions like clicks on the profile link. To improve these numbers, Instagram competitor analysis provides ideas on what works in your industry.

How to increase your interactions

Content format matters. According to Socialinsider (2025), carousels have an average engagement of 0.55% (per follower) and reels 0.52%, while single images stay at 0.37%. Dash Social for 2026 records reels at 2.7% and carousels at 1.4%.

Posting frequency affects account growth. Research by Metricool and HypeAuditor (across 700 million posts) showed that 2-3 posts per week bring an average follower increase of 19%, while 10 or more posts raise the rate to 79%. The global peak time is recorded as 8 p.m. (local time). If you struggle to maintain a rhythm, an Instagram posting schedule will help.

Numbers · InteractionWhat affects Instagram engagement

Statistics showing how posting frequency and communication help your account.

21%increase in engagement when you reply to comments

79%follower increase with 10+ posts per week

3xmore likes and comments for influencers versus brands

Sources: Buffer 2025, Metricool 2025.

Communicating with users brings measurable results.
